Sourav Ganguly advises angry Virat Kohli to forgive and forget

first_imgThe acrimony on field between India and Australia in the recently concluded Test series has left the Indian skipper Virat Kohli a angry man. His comments post match that ‘he would not ever say again that he is friends with Australian cricketers’ highlight the bitterness Kohli is carrying. But former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes it will be a matter of time before Kohli lets bygones be bygones. (Also read: Virat Kohli says his friendship with Australian cricketers is over)”I am sure he will loosen up with time. He should forget what happens with the Australian players on the ground (sledging). That is competitiveness. But what happens with media and ex-players getting into sledging the opposition captain wasn’t right. It is not their job,” he tells India Today. (Also read: Virat Kohli ecstatic after historic triumph: ‘Our best series win so far’)The Indian team accused the Australian team of systematically abusing DRS protocol by discretely seeking a second opinion from the dressing room. Former Australian cricketers like Ian Healy also got in the act targeting Kohli, so did a section of the Australian media. Australia skipper Steve Smith was caught on camera using an expletive loud from the dressing room when Murli Vijay claimed a catch that ended up being given not out.(Also read: Virat Kohli blasts detractors: If someone pokes us, we won’t back down)The BCCI website also posted a video sequence of Ravindra Jadeja being persistently sledged by the Australians while he was batting.(Also read: Virat Kohli has ensured India won’t ever back down: Michael Clarke to India Today)advertisementGanguly is no stranger to being at receiving end of the Australian cricket ways, with the entire ecosystem from media to ex-players rallying around the team to target the opposition and rival captain.”That’s the way Australia have always played their cricket from the Steve Waugh days,” he says.Ganguly was the pioneer from an opposing Indian camp in irking Australian teams in similar terms; famously coming late for toss keeping Steve Waugh waiting. But he does not make much of the distaste one saw during the series and advises the Indian captain  to relish the win. “I don’t consider there was bad blood. I consider there was competition. Both Virat and Smith should be happy they could put up a show. Both boards and players should get over it,” he opines. The Indian team did not take up Steve Smith’s overture to share a drink after the Dharamsala Test. But Ganguly believes things will be fine soon when Indian and Australian cricketers come together in the same dressing room for IPL.”They will get to know each other again. They will be fine,” he says.ALSO WATCH:last_img read more

Ben Stokes fit and ready to fire for England: Joe Root

first_imgEngland Test captain Joe Root is confident that all-rounder Ben Stokes is ready to fire for England once again as he has regained full fitness.Stokes, set to play his first home Test since being charged with affray after an incident in Bristol last September, bowled just 10 overs in two Tests on the tour of New Zealand earlier this year after struggling with back problems.”Watch Ben train and he sets the standard. He’s the standout. If you watch the whole session, he does it at an intensity and he does drive it,” Root said ahead of his side’s opening Test against Pakistan, starting at Lord’s on Thursday.”To have his bowling as well will add to our attack and give us a different dimension. That’s really pleasing for me as captain and us as a side.”Stokes failed to set the Indian Premier League (IPL) alight with the Rajasthan Royals this season but Root will be pleased that one of his main seamers is bowling at full speed again.”In the nets, he has bowled nicely. One thing about playing in the IPL, you’re always maintaining workloads and building up throughout that period,” Root added.”Might not be in terms of throughout a day or a week, but Ben is a fit lad, he knows how to get ready for a game. He knows that when he gets out there he will give absolutely everything for England.”England will play two Tests against Pakistan, with the second match at Headingley starting on June 1.advertisement(With Reuters inputs)last_img read more

Update: Slowly but Surely Concordia Convoy Pushes Ahead

first_imgzoom After approximately 30 hours of navigation, the Concordia has travelled for 63 nautical miles at an average speed of 2 knots. At the moment, the convoy is located between Isola d’Elba and Corsica, the salvage team informed last night. The sea was said to be calm, accompanied by a North/North East wind with a speed of approximately 13 knots.“The assessments performed on sponsons and their connections – cables, chains and strand-jacks – have given positive results. The climate on board is calm and the navigation proceeds without problems,” the salvage officials informed.Accordingly, inspections showed that there are no signs of environmental pollution. The salvage team said that environmental monitoring by public institutions were in progress, as well as samplings carried out by the marine biologists of University La Sapienza that have been appointed by Costa Crociere and the Titan Micoperi consortium. For today favorable marine conditions are forecasted, with light winds coming from the south. With these conditions, the arrival of the Concordia in Genoa Prà-Voltri port is expected for Sunday July 27th at 3 in the morning. The long-awaited departure of Costa Concordia for scrapping in Genoa began at around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning. The wreck is being towed by two tugs, under the escort of over a dozen other vessels, including two auxiliary tugs positioned aft, a pontoon with a 200-tonne crane, carrying personnel and equipment along with teams of environmental biologists. The sailing route will take the vessels south between the island of Giglio and Giannutri before heading west-southwest to a point south of the island of Montecristo. The convoy will then head west-northwest to a position south of the island called Scoglio d’Africa before crossing the Ligurian Sea to the Port of Genoa Voltri, as explained by the salvage team officials.World Maritime News Staff, July 25, 2014last_img read more

Minister Ready to Act on Closure Report

first_imgEducation Minister Karen Casey is prepared to introduce amendments to the Education Act to strengthen the community’s role in reviewing schools for possible closure. In her initial response to the report of the School Closure Process Review Committee today, Feb. 8, the education minister said she has shared the report with cabinet and the eight school boards, and through the boards, with school advisory councils and school communities across the province. Ms. Casey will consider comments received from stakeholders during the next few weeks before releasing a final response and introducing amendments to the legislation, possibly during the spring session. The minister’s response addresses the status of 10 schools that were under review in March 2006. “The school review process included in any proposed amendments would, if passed, apply to those 10 schools and our request to postpone their review would be rescinded,” said Ms. Casey. Ms. Casey supports the following recommendations in the report: — remove the word closure from references to the process in the act and regulations; — clarify the criteria for identifying schools for review; — have board staff prepare a comprehensive report on each school being reviewed and recommend an outcome of that review, to which a study committee would respond; –extend the time frame of the review process from four months to one year; — encourage school staff and administration and require school advisory councils, where they exist, to participate on study committees; and — require the principal of a school slated for closure and the principal of a receiving school to develop a transition strategy for the affected students. As well, the Department of Education will consider examining the current process and related legislation that governs the school consolidation process. The School Closure Process Review Committee met with school board members and staff, and held 10 public meetings in September and October 2006. The committee received 145 response forms and written submissions and heard 64 presentations.last_img read more

AAP representing Purvanchalis since day one says Dilip Pandey

first_imgFrom the promise of standing beside the self-respect of the Purvanchali community to the dream of transforming the Yamuna Paar area. From stardom vs common man goals to the issue of full statehood, AAP North East Delhi candidate Dilip Pandey talks exclusively to Sayantan Ghosh. North East Delhi has a large Purvanchali population and from the day 1, AAP alleged that BJP has deleted many such voters name from the list, what is the ground situation of this constituency? Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderTo understand the ground politics of this constituency you have to look at the history of Purvanchalis in Delhi. Before AAP came to power in Delhi there was no political party which prioritised the Purvanchalis. When we started our work from day one we started representing these people. When I became the state convenor, I started sitting with the community people regularly to find out the issues they face. Later, BJP brought MP Manoj Tiwari who however hardly represented the Purvanchalis of Delhi. Then a time came when Purvanchalis were beaten up mercilessly by the BJP. We protested and held many local rallies. I also wrote to the BJP MPs on the issue but no one really did anything. Lastly, they came down to cut voters names from the list and we unmasked that too. Recently, if you see the Purvanchali turn out at Manoj Tiwari’s rally at Ramleela Maidan, you will see that there was very less Purvanchali presence. This shows that in the ground BJP has no support of these people. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchings Current MP from this area is not only the state BJP chief but also one of the biggest stars of Bhojpuri film industry, how difficult for you to fight his stardom? He is a very big man and a star. But my fight is not against the stardom but for the people of North East Delhi. This part has been underdeveloped for years and that is what my top focus is. People of this area has always voted for big names some times for stars, sometimes for great politicians but this time I want people to vote for a person who stays with them. I can not fight the money power of BJP but I have the willpower hence here is the fight between money vs willpower. If you become the MP then what are the key things you would be working? If you ever ask a person of North East Delhi who is travelling to Central Delhi that where is he or she going, then you will get the answer that he or she is going to Delhi. The people here still find them as people of “Yamuna Paar” and my key focus is to change this notion. I will make this as developed as Delhi. The work has already started and the kickstart was the inauguration of Signature Bridge. Thereafter metro Pink Line also work also completed and many key projects of making roads are on the pipeline. When so many development works are needed for this area then how are you communicating the party’s key agenda of full statehood demand to the people? It is not a tough job as a major section of this are is the direct beneficiary of the Delhi government schemes. When I talk about full statehood I also say that on the full statehood can make Delhi safer and also help me to finish the pending works for. For an underdeveloped are like this constituency safety, housing, education and jobs have high demand. I am telling them that only if we get the full-statehood we would be able to deliver as required else everything would be delayed. I think the people of Delhi have witnessed the good work of AAP-government and empathise with the fact that the Center always obstruct the work.last_img read more

In Norway Annan urges longterm commitment to fight against AIDS

Speaking to the press after a luncheon with the Norwegian Minister of International Development, Anne Kristin Sydnes, the Secretary-General said that in addition to the 13 million children in the world orphaned by AIDS, “we are also extremely concerned with what I consider the cruellest of all transmissions, from mother to child. It is one area that we also need to do quite a lot of work on and I think there are lots of organizations who are now becoming engaged.”Mr. Annan said he hoped that “we will be persistent, we will stay the course and do whatever we can to defeat this epidemic, both in terms of re-energizing scientific research and the search for a vaccine and cure, as well as giving assistance to those who are infected and harping strongly on the message of prevention.” As for the epidemic’s long-term consequences in Africa, the Secretary-General said that if not handled properly, AIDS had the potential to take away the continent’s future. “Some of the most productive people and people in their prime are being killed by the disease,” Mr. Annan said. “The percentage of people between the ages of 14 and 42 who are dying of the disease is quite high, and these are the people you rely upon to develop society, so it also has impact on economic development and exacerbates the poverty.””This is why it is important that we do all we can to try and stem the spread of disease through education and making it possible for everyone who is likely to be infected, to know how to defend himself or herself, and provide care to those who have been infected,” he stressed. The Secretary-General had started his day with a private breakfast with one of his advisers, Thorvald Stoltenberg, the former Foreign Minister of Norway. Mr. Annan then held a meeting with his Special Coordinator for the Middle East, Terje Roed-Larsen, followed by a tour of Norway’s Parliament with members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, before his lunch with Ms. Sydnes. In the afternoon, the Secretary-General and his wife laid a wreath on the grave of Trygve Lie, the first UN Secretary-General, before leaving the country. read more

Minister says its absolutely deadly that more people have availed of free

first_img Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty Minister says it’s ‘absolutely deadly’ that more people have availed of free dental and eye exams Regina Doherty said there’d been a fourfold increase in the number of claims for free treatment benefits. Wednesday 21 Feb 2018, 7:26 AM Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty Image: Sam Boal/Rollingnews.ie Share103 Tweet Email7 44,926 Views Feb 21st 2018, 7:26 AM MINISTER FOR SOCIAL Protection Regina Doherty has said there has been a surge in uptake for free optical and dental treatments since self-employed workers and their spouses were added to the scheme. The provision of dental cleaning and the supply or repair has been particularly popular, she said, in response to a question from Fine Gael party colleague Peter Fitzpatrick in the Dáil yesterday.Minister Doherty said: “Between self-employed contributors and their dependent spouses, those changes have added 450,000 customers to the scheme, which I think is absolutely deadly.”She said that over 330,000 claims have been processed and paid in the three months from November 2017 to January 2018, describing it as a fourfold increase on the previous year. The restoration of provisions such as dental came into effect last October, with workers entitled to a full-scale and polish, and if necessary, protracted periodontal treatment, in addition to the existing free dental exam. While Fitzpatrick had asked specifically about uptake of the benefits among the self-employed, Doherty couldn’t provide specific figures but said the increase in claims was a “good indicator”.She said: “It is not possible to identify treatment benefit claims from the self-employed without significant analysis and development work, as the Department does not record this information under separate pay-related social insurance, PRSI, classes.  We do not ask when a service use appears whether they are employed or self-employed.”Fitzpatrick said that self-employed people should be entitled to the same benefits as a full-time person working to pay their PRSI.“To me it is a brave person who gets up in the morning, goes to the bank, gets a loan and starts his or her own business,” he said. “These people have to be looked after.”Doherty replied that she agreed with her party colleague, and said that her department was working on a scheme that would provide jobseeker’s allowance and jobseeker’s benefit to self-employed people who become unemployed. She added: “If I won the lotto tomorrow, we might do it much sooner than we will be able to.  It is very much dependent on the growth in the economy.

Le 29 mars 2012 à 14:20 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more
