Still too early to talk about moving Boxing Day test – CA

first_imgMELBOURNE, (Reuters) – Cricket Australia interim Chief Executive Nick Hockley has said it was still too early to determine whether they would shift the Boxing Day test match against India from Melbourne as the state of Victoria battled a novel coronavirus resurgence. The Melbourne Cricket Ground has hosted a test match from Dec. 26-Dec. 30 in all but one year since 1980 and the game has become a staple on the Australian sporting calendar. The Sydney Morning Herald, however, reported on Saturday that the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust were considering mounting a bid to host back-to-back tests over the Christmas-New Year period if the COVID-19 situation in Melbourne did not stabilise.“In terms of Boxing Day, it’s one of the most iconic events in the Australian sporting calendar, and we are working full steam ahead,” Hockley told reporters on a conference call on Saturday.  “As long as circumstances allow, we will be doing everything we can to play the Boxing Day test at the MCG. At the moment we are planning to have things go ahead.” Victoria, Australia’s second-most populous state, is at the centre of a second wave of infections in the country, accounting for more than two-thirds of the national tally of nearly 21,000 cases. The southeastern state, of which Melbourne is the capital, has recorded 181 deaths, almost 70% of the Australia’s fatalities from the pandemic.Hockley said the new wave of infections only showed that Cricket Australia had to be “agile and flexible” with their plans for not just the four-test, three one-day match tour by India but the entire domestic and international schedule. “As we have seen with the winter codes, we need to be agile and flexible all the way through,” Hockley said.“As, when and if things change, we are doing everything we can that we make sure we have all the backup arrangements and can get cricket played.”last_img read more

Poland adds further restrictions to online gambling framework

first_img Related Articles Share Share Submit StumbleUpon Mateusz Juroszek – Non-stop STS will expand amid industry disruptions August 12, 2020 Polish wagering report highlights STS market dominance  August 17, 2020 To the surprise of gambling stakeholders, the Polish government has rejected amendments to liberalise its online gambling framework, instead choosing to add further operator restrictions. With foreign operators expecting Polish regulators to add online casino and poker provisions to its online gambling framework, the Polish Council of Ministers announced that slot games would be restricted to play on state-owned lottery operator Totalizator Sportowy. The council’s amendments will surprise Polish licensed betting operators, who expected the amendments to implement new business conditions in-line with European Union market policies.Defending its stance, the Polish Council of Ministers stated that its restriction on slot games was needed since it was “the most addictive form of gambling” which should be monitored by a state-owned enterprise.Furthermore, the council has made no changes to its unpopular 12% tax on sports betting turnover, despite numerous ministers stating that Poland should follow Denmark’s lead and implement a 20% charge on betting revenues. The new amendments implemented by the council, are set to be forwarded to the European Commission for review. However, industry commentators have stated that with continued high taxes  and further product restrictions Poland is unlikely to become a an attractive market proposition for international operators. Yanda takes part in practice for first time this summer

first_img(This blog brought to you by Atlantic Remodeling. Visit www.atlanticremodeling.com to learn about their Red Cent Guarantee!)OWINGS MILLS, Md. — With plenty of uncertainty surrounding their starting offense, the Ravens received good news Monday with the return of Pro Bowl right guard Marshal Yanda to the practice field. The 28-year-old took part in the workout in a limited capacity, doing individual work and taking some reps with the starting offense in the non-contact practice.“It was great to see him back out there in a limited amount in terms of what he was able to do,” offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell said. “It’s always great to have him out there. He’s a great leader. Obviously, he’s been in meetings and things of that nature, but he brings a lot of experience and certainly a lot of toughness to our guys upfront.”Sidelined for the entire spring after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, Yanda was taking part in practice for the first time this summer. The seventh-year lineman had made good progress in his rehab and had been taking part in morning walk-throughs for quite some time, according to head coach John Harbaugh.Yanda hadn’t been in pads since Super Bowl XLVII in February as he underwent a procedure to repair a torn rotator cuff, forcing him to miss organized team activities and mandatory minicamp in the spring. However, the Ravens never expressed concern that the 2007 third-round pick wouldn’t be ready for the start of the regular season despite acknowledging that he’d miss a substantial portion of training camp before returning.“I don’t want to put an exact date on it, but it will be in training camp pretty good,” Harbaugh said about the standout guard on July 31. “We aren’t in a rush with him. [He is] very much on schedule. He’s doing certain things. He does things in the morning. He goes through the morning workout. He goes through some individual stuff, so he’s practicing. He’s just not going through the contact stuff, but he’s doing very, very well.”Yanda was working with the first-team offensive line in a lighter practice that featured helmets, shells, and shorts on Monday afternoon, but it would appear he won’t make his live-game debut until at least the third preseason game next week against the Carolina Panthers.Newly-signed veteran wide receiver Brandon Stokley was also taking part in his first practice after officially signing a one-year deal with Baltimore on Sunday. However, veteran tight end Dallas Clark was not on the field for the early portion of practice as he was undergoing a physical and finalizing his deal with the Ravens.Second-year running back Bernard Pierce (knee) also returned to practice after missing the last two workouts since the preseason opener when he injured his knee in the second quarter. Harbaugh said Sunday that Pierce has a chance to play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.Linebacker Bryan Hall (hamstring) also returned to the practice field after being sidelined since the preseason opener.A number of players were still missing from the practice field on Monday including linebacker Courtney Upshaw, cornerbacks Chykie Brown (undisclosed) and Chris Johnson (undisclosed), defensive tackle Marcus Spears (undisclosed), wide receivers Deonte Thompson (foot) and Marlon Brown (undisclosed), offensive linemen Ramon Harewood (knee) and Ryan Jensen (foot), and tight ends Ed Dickson (hamstring) and Dennis Pitta (hip).Linebacker Jameel McClain (neck) remains on the active physically unable to perform list and defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore (knee) is still on the non-football injury list.Caldwell excited to have Stokley, Clark in foldJim Caldwell had his first opportunity to comment on the veteran additions of Stokley and Clark, who worked with the Baltimore offensive coordinator in Indianapolis.Stokley played with the Colts from 2003 through 2006 when Caldwell was the quarterbacks coach while Clark spent the first nine years of his career in Indianapolis, which included Caldwell’s three-year tenure as head coach. Despite being at the tail end of their respective careers, both players are expected to provide the Ravens with middle-of-the-field options they’re looking for with Anquan Boldin and Dennis Pitta no longer in the picture.“You can see that they’ve been productive,” Caldwell said. “Obviously, their roles have changed over the years — maybe haven’t played quite as much in certain situations. We have a good blend of personnel groupings that we use and we certainly would be able to get them in the mix and give them an opportunity to show what they can do.”Clark’s best season came in 2009 — Caldwell’s first season as the Indianapolis head man — when he caught 100 passes for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns to earn his first and only trip to the Pro Bowl.Caldwell had stayed in contact in recent days with his former tight end through text messaging but hadn’t spoken to Clark over the last couple days as an agreement was reached.“John [Harbaugh] and Ozzie [Newsome] take a look at all the possibilities and make determinations as such,” said Caldwell, who downplayed the impact of his relationships with Clark and Stokley in the Ravens’ decision to sign each player. “Every once in a while they’ll ask for what [my] opinion is on certain situations, but it does not carry the predominance of the weight. They look at it all, see if it’s a good fit for us, and make the decision from there.”Upshaw excused from practiceUpshaw’s absence from the practice Sunday M&T Bank Stadium remained a mystery until his social media activity early on Monday. The second-year linebacker wrote on his official Twitter account about a new addition to his family and defensive coordinator Dean Pees confirmed after Monday’s practice that the second-year linebacker was excused from the team for the birth of his son.Upshaw has worked as the starting strongside outside linebacker with veteran Elvis Dumervil serving as more of a pass-rush specialist to this point in the summer, which would also free him up to occasionally spell Terrell Suggs at the rush linebacker position as well.“They’ll all play. They all have a role on this team,” Pees said. “It’s a game-to-game thing, and a lot depend one the packages we have in and what we’re doing for that particular game. They’re all good players and they’re ll going to play.”Upshaw made two tackles against the Buccaneers in the preseason opener.Practice highlightsStokley worked with both the first and second offenses and ran a crisp sideline route to beat cornerback Corey Graham for a touchdown from quarterback Joe Flacco early in the practice session. However, the quarterback and receiver weren’t on the same page a few plays later as Stokley appeared to run the wrong route and the pass sailed into the arms of cornerback Lardarius Webb. Needless to say, Stokley was doing plenty of learning on the fly as he tried to get up to speed in Caldwell’s offensive system. … Webb still isn’t a full participant in team drills, but the fifth-year cornerback continues to increase his level of activity in team drills and recorded two interceptions on Monday. Pees was noncommittal about Webb’s potential participation in the preseason, deferring to Harbaugh and the training staff in describing where the cornerback is physically at this stage. … Wide receiver Torrey Smith made a nifty touchdown catch over cornerback Asa Jackson on a fade route during an 11-on-11 red-zone drill on Monday. … The practice marked the first time all summer that the projected starting offensive line was able to work together as left tackle Bryant McKinnie, left guard Kelechi Osemele, center Gino Gradkowski, Yanda, and right tackle Michael Oher worked a limited number of plays together in team drills.last_img read more

Alex Ovechkin’s Hat Trick Carries the Caps Over the Wild

first_imgAlexander Ovechkin scored three times, Nicklas Backstrom added three assists, and Braden Holtby made 33 saves as the Washington Capitals overcame a chippy Minnesota Wild team and some questionable officiating to earn a 4-3 victory at the Xcel Energy Center. The Gr8 was dynamite in this contest scoring three times in the middle frame and generating 15 shot attempts, including 10 shots on goal in 19:47 of action. All three tallies were the result of Ovechkin going to the net, and the second marker came on the power play, which was important given the recent slump from that unit (0 for 19 before the Ovi Empty Net PPG in Nashville). Washington’s power play looked like its old self on that second goal.Backstrom is just a wizard on the ice. His play to keep the puck in on the third Gr8 marker was incredible (the Wild unsuccessfully challenged it too), and then he finished it off with some great wall work. The line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Oshie was excellent and between the three of them, they had 16 of the Capitals 33 shots on goal.Holtby gave up two late goals after it was 3-1 and then 4-2, the first of which came on a power play that the Wild received when Justin Williams was called for cross checking right after Andre Burakovsky was flattened with a dirty hit from behind. Mike Leggo and Frederick “Ship him back to Quebec” L’Ecuyer failed to whistle the infraction against the Wild. They called a curious contest on Thursday, but once again Washington was too good for the opponents and the bad zebras. Both referees also missed a dirty butt end by Mikael Granlund to the face of Evgeny Kuznetsov after the second Minnesota goal on the neutral zone draw. #92 left the game and did not return, so his status for Saturday’s game in Dallas is up in the air.The last Wild tally came with four seconds left after Jason Chimera had made it 4-2 with an empty net marker with just 52 ticks remaining. That tally, Chimmer’s 15th of the season, was set up by great work from John Carlson in the corner and then Tom Wilson, who worked the puck out of the zone to spring the speedy #25.Carlson had his best game since returning from injury getting an assist and going +2 in 23:46 of ice time. He looked like his old self in this one and helped get the power play to finally score with a keeper in place. His hard shot went off of the back wall right to Ovechkin on the 2nd goal. He had his legs back and was really physical and strong on the puck in the corners.Ovechkin now has 34 goals and leads Chicago’s Patrick Kane by one in the Rocket Richard race. Holtby is now 27-1-3 in his last 32 starts and has 35 wins on the season.Wins are the important thing there, as both co-MVP’s and the others on this club only care about the “W’s.” Ovechkin has enough individual trophies, and at this point, he only wants that big silver one they give out in June. But make no mistake about it, this club still relies on him to lead the way when it comes to turning on red lights.Overall, the Caps played a very solid road game and when things looked to go off of the rails with some Minnesota dirty play and shaky zebra influence, Washington maintained their composure to hold off a desperate Wild team. Holtby made some big saves and Backstrom cleared a puck from the door step late in regulation en route to another Capitals victory. The Caps record is now an out of this world 40-9-4 (84 points) and they close out their three game road trip in Big D on Saturday night. Per CSN’s Chuck Gormley, the Caps are 0-6-1 against the Stars since 2008, OUCH! Washington has a chance to finally knock off a very fast Dallas squad, but they’ll need a really strong and disciplined game (stay out of the box!) plus good gap control to combat the likes of Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn on their home turf.Notes: Mike Richards, who was nicked up in the Nashville game, suited up and logged 11:03 on his 31st birthday…the Caps were destroyed on draws, 46-22, but Backstrom was 12-9…Zach Parise had three assists for the Wild…Minnesota out shot the Caps 36-33 and it was 72-56 overall in shot attempts…both teams were 1 for 5 on the power play…Karl Alzner was +2 in 22:07 of ice time. He had a strong game.last_img read more

El-Kanemi Warriors’ New Boy Ohanu Targets NPFL Safety

first_imgNew El-kanemi Warriors signing, Michael Ohanu, has revealed his desire to help the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) outfit escape relegation at the end of the season.El-kanemi Warriors are in a battle to avoid the drop with the Maiduguri-based outfit currently four places and one point above the relegation zone.Michael Ohanu scored a record 21 goals for Kwara United in the Nigeria National League (NNL) last season to help the Afonja Warriors secure NPFL promotion but has struggled for form since the start of the season. He joined El-kanemi Warriors during the mid-season and is ready to play his part to help his new club retain their top flight status having already scored three goals.Ohanu made this known in a chat with the league’s website. In his words, he said: “Since I joined the club in mid-season, the coaches, my teammates and fans have been really warm to me. It has helped me settled down well in Maiduguri and I can say I have struck a fairly decent bond with the team.”“Unfortunately I joined them at a time they are struggling but as a professional football player all I want to do is give my best and make sure that the club remains in the top league. I know they have been in the top league for six years now and staying in it for the seventh year and more won’t be a bad idea.” He added.Speaking further, Ohanu said: “I feel better and even more confident now having scored three times for my club. It wasn’t that my previous team was not good, but I think we were unfortunate not to win games and even score more goals because we played well in most of our games ”“But to be able to score goals with El-Kanemi is good for me as a striker and I hope I can get more when the league resumes after the World Cup.” He concluded. On his goals’ target, his response was that: “I will prefer to take each game as they come and remain optimistic.”Micheal Ohanu and his El-kanemi Warriors teammates will continue their survival bid when they travel to take on Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium upon the league resumption on July 18.Relatedlast_img read more
