against Gujarat Lions saying one bad game does not make them poor KKR failed to defend a score of 187 against Gujarat with most of their bowlers leaking runs Skipper Gautam Gambhir’s ploy of picking Shakib Al Hasan did not work and the Bangladeshi spinner conceded 31 from his three overs while Sunil Narine gave away 42 from his four-over quota KKR coach Jacques Kallis IPL/SportzPics "We don’t become a bad bowling unit after just one game We will have some good game plans in place RCB are down in the table with just two wins from six and they are looking for some form Hopefully we will use that in our favour We still have a lot of confidence" Kallis said Kallis rued that the team could not post a 200-plus target for the Gujarat Lions "But I must say that they bowled well especially in the last five overs where we got only 46 runs So yes it was disappointing that we fell 10-15 runs short" the South African said Suresh Raina led from the front with a match-winning 84 as Gujarat Lions returned to winning ways by handing KKR a big setback ahead of the Royal Challengers Bangalore fixture tomorrow "I still think we could have defended the score It was certainly not our best bowling performance We will have to recover and be up for RCB" he said Defending a total at the Eden seems to be a problem and the legendary former South African all-rounder said "It just seems to be a trend that sides chasing tend to win more So I don’t think that’s an issue We need to up our standards in all the departments that’s how we see it" Raina made the difference in the chase and Kallis had some words of praise for the left-hander "Every player has got his place Some can rotate strike some can hit big Raina is a good all-round player I don’t think we bowled as well to him as we could have done and should have done" he said Washington: Ousted White House national security adviser Michael Flynn has agreed to provide testimony to officials investigating alleged ties between Russia and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in exchange for immunity from prosecution the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday According to the daily Flynn proposed his deal to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the House and Senate intelligence committees File image of Donald Trump AP Flynn a close advisor on Trump’s 2016 campaign was forced to step down as Trump’s national security adviser last month after making misleading statements about talks he had held with Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak concerning Washington’s sanctions on Moscow The Wall Street Journal said it "wasn’t clear" what exactly Flynn had offered to discuss but cited one unnamed official as saying the retired army general’s bid for immunity suggested potential "legal jeopardy" At least four separate congressional investigations are underway into allegations that Moscow tried to swing November’s presidential election in Trump’s favor as questions swirl about whether some in the Republican’s inner circle colluded with Russia A former US military intelligence chief Flynn was generously paid to attend a gala of Russia’s RT television in late 2015 where he sat together with Putin raising suspicions of some critics about too-close ties with Moscow His ouster came amid controversy over his discussions with Kislyak in late December when the Obama administration was hitting Russia with retaliatory sanctions and expulsions for its election interference Soon after Flynn resigned US Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any Russia-related inquiries following the revelation that he also met Kislyak before Trump took office —contrary to Sessions’s testimony during his confirmation hearing Written by Express News Service | Panchkula | Published: April 22 for JD(U) two months ago Caste is back as the major agenda for Bihar this election As a piece onIBNLive explains the2009 Lok Sabhaand 2010 Assemblypolls caste lines took a back seat to Nitish’s The BJP has managed to retain its core vote bank of forward castes and is also hopeful of getting Yadav votes in many seats where the RJD is weak" However despite Meira Kumar’s history and the fierce campaigning Congress has a lot to worry about in Bihar where BJP has played the caste card much better However JD(U) might turn out to be the biggest loser if poll pundits are to be believed Though they have snapped ties with the BJP over the minority issue they might stand to lose some Muslim votes For Nitish Kumar’s party which was counting on sweeping the Muslim vote the newly-minted (Source: Reuters) Related News There is an understandable swell of sympathy regarding Anil Kumble’s decision to discontinue as India coach His past as a match-winner his good win-loss record as a coach and the manner in which his tenure was cut short after misunderstandings with captain Virat Kohli and a few senior players has earned him support Visuals of him mopping around alone on the dressing room balcony during India’s loss against Pakistan only accentuated those sentiments It’s a tribute to Kumble that such sentiments have been whipped up For last year when Ravi Shastri was replaced by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) despite doing a stellar job of inspiring a young team and being backed by the captain and many in the team there wasn’t much public support or sympathy Any whispers of dissent that emerged were immediately hushed and shot down by the choice of someone of Kumble’s stature As soon as his name came up the Shastri file was closed without much of a post mortem But it deserves a little rewind now as it’s the past that shapes the present and will colour the future Kohli was captain but his choice seemingly didn’t matter then Neither did the voices of support for Shastri that bubbled up from a few senior players It was a choice that was foisted from above on the players In their playing days the CAC members — Sachin Tendulkar Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman — chose or influenced the coach but weren’t willing to give the current lot the same courtesy Not that the choice of Kumble was unanimous then It took a vote from Laxman to break the deadlock after Tendulkar and Ganguly chose Shastri and Kumble respectively The Indian cricket board slipped up even at that juncture They sensed the mood of the team and the way the Kumble decision was made and came up with a silly compromise: Have Shastri as an assistant coach to Kumble a decision that was rejected by all parties concerned Just imagine the groupism that would have kicked in with multiple power centres In the end the captain’s preference was overlooked and Kumble took over It was a decision against two characters: Despite the performances under him Shastri wasn’t seen as a serious coach who could responsibly mentor and guide a team And despite his stated preference Kohli wasn’t to be given untrammelled power and his man alongside him With Shastri at the helm stereotypes took over: oh a boisterous fun-loving personality like him might not be ideal for a young captain and a team It was forgotten that Shastri was a player who overcame his limitations with bloodymindedness and ambition and that he could pass those traits to the current Indian team It was a pity that Shastri’s man Bharat Arun the bowling coach also had to lose out as most player reports about him were pretty laudatory With Kumble in stereotypes ruled again: that a determined player who shrugged off conventional wisdom to achieve what he did can inspire and discipline a team to great heights There was nothing wrong in that assessment but sometimes things just don’t go the way one thinks they would A captain already a touch wary about the new man in charge and a coach a strong individual who has been captain and commanded respect from cricketers around the world began their collision in slow motion Reports are varied about the origin of misunderstanding: it’s been said it was from the IPL days issues over team selection in West Indies and even during the home series against England and Australia Occasionally it was about the coach backing a particular player at times it has been the captain’s choice of players and once it was about a player being pushed to prepare for longer hours than he was prepared for — from outside all this might seem usual grist to the mill that would happen even in a school team when different individuals come together But obviously things have a way of spiralling out of control in the adult world Considering that the CAC decided to go for Kumble again one can only assume they did a proper check and found there wasn’t any insurmountable issue The board which is supposed to run its usual checks and balances with the manager’s reports after every series and what not could have done a far better job in stubbing out the misunderstanding before it became untenable Kumble’s resignation letter too was an extraordinary statement in itself claiming all the virtues and goodness for himself leaving little to doubt about what he really thinks about Kohli It also claimed that he wasn’t told by BCCI till a day ago that the captain had an issue with him — which in itself is a statement on how far the relationship between the two had gone sour It doesn’t reflect well on the coach to claim that he was unaware of the feelings in the team about him — after all he is supposed to know the pulse of the team In popular perception it has come down to Kumble vs Kohli but it can be said here that a few other players had raised doubts about Kumble in private The criticism wasn’t always about him being intimidating but about the way he reacted to match situations Perhaps the body language was misinterpreted by the players who made a wrong assessment — whatever be the case what can be done when the players feel a level of discomfort and disconnect with the coach As Shastri would have said on air something’s gotta give — and it’s not a surprise that the relationship between the coach and a few players began to break down When the dust settles down Kumble’s legacy as a coach can be seen in a better light The successful comeback story of Cheteshwar Pujara who was given confidence and support to forget all the silly brouhaha over his strike rate would feature at the top of his achievements While a couple of players might not have appreciated the gruelling sessions administered at the insistence of Kumble they would perhaps come around in time to acknowledge the improvement in their games The entire episode brings a greater focus on Kohli It might seem as if he has got his way now but it only puts a great deal of pressure on him Speculation is bound to rise with the Board deciding to call in for more applications: Does that mean Virender Sehwag isn’t a shoe-in anymore Does that mean he too has decided to stay away after the current mess He might not have been an Indian captain ever but Sehwag’s stature and stardom was greater than most Indian cricketers of the past It would be silly to assume that he would take over and be a mute spectator especially now when he has built a brand around himself about his outspokenness Does it mean Shastri can come back as the coach What would happen if the captain runs into problems with the new coach whoever it may be Would the board appoint a yes-man to appease their captain This episode gives rise to such speculation People will question whether Kohli’s ego spilt over too much and he has to take such accusations on the chin and move on The choice of the new coach will surely tell us about the direction Kohli and the board want to take the Indian team For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: Pimpri-Chinchwad unit chief Laxman Jagtap Mayor Nitin Kalje and Azam Pansare during a press conference in Pimpri on Tuesday (Source: Express) Top News A DAY after the Ajit Pawar-led NCP demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launch a probe into allegations of corruption against BJP-ruled Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) the BJP hit back alleging that the complainant was closely associated with NCP leaders and a “history-sheeter” Addressing a press conference in Pimpri on Tuesday president of BJP’s PCMC unit Laxman Jagtap produced “copies of criminal cases” filed against the man who had filed the complaint at the PMO grievance cell “We have proof about the complainant’s close association with NCP leaders and his criminal record He has at least 10 criminal cases filed against his name He was also slapped with an MCOCA We have procured his criminal record from the Pune police” said Jagtap Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Dahane said they are verifying the record As of now we are aware of at least two cases filed against the man he added Identifying the complainant as Pramod Sathe Jagtap said “What is the locus standi of this man…he is neither a contractor nor a resident of Pimpri-Chinchwad He has made the allegations after being instigated by some NCP leaders with whom he is closely associated” Jagtap added that the bills of some of the contractors who are allegedly close to NCP leaders have not been cleared as they were submitted after the deadline “And therefore the contractors in tandem with NCP leaders instigated Sathe to file the complaint…but then the complainant himself is of a dubious character” he said He added that the PCMC has from this year put in place a new rule regarding the submission of bills for payment by contractors “It was made mandatory for contractors to submit the bills by March 31 However several of them submitted their bills after March 31 and therefore there payments have been delayed Some of these contractors are close to NCP leaders and therefore they are resorting to dubious means to get their bills cleared” he said On how the PMO sought probe by PCMC without verifying the antecedent of the complainant the BJP leaders remained evasive Mayor Nitin Kalje Standing Committee Chairperson Seema Savale BJP House leader Eknath Pawar along with other party leaders Azam Pansare and Sarang Kamtekar were also present at the press conference Meanwhile NCP Pimpri-Chinchwad President Sanjog Waghere denied that the NCP had any association with the complainant “We deny that we are familiar with Sathe We have no association with him and neither are we aware of his antecedents He had complained to the PMO and the grievance looked genuine therefore we called for a thorough probe into the matter” he said As for the security sought for the complainant Waghere said “When we called the complainant he told us that he feared a threat to his life Therefore we had sought police protection” he added After the complaint was filed the PMO had asked PCMC to investigate the matter Accordingly PCMC Commissioner Shravan Hardikar launched an investigation The complainant had alleged that BJP leaders and PCMC accountant Rajesh Lande were demanding three per cent commission from contractors for clearing their bills Lande had denied the allegations stating that he did not allow any contractor inside his office for days before and after March 31 PCMC chief said “They have initiated a probe into the complaint…the complaint is of general nature so we have asked the complainant to
