Jerry Cross to retire from One Credit Union, oversaw vigorous growth

first_imgVermont Business Magazine After 32 years of faithful service, Jerry Cross, President and CEO of One Credit Union has announced his intent to retire at the end of February. When Jerry joined Bryant Credit Union in 1985, it was a fledgling outfit with just $1.8 million in assets, 1,400 members, and only the most basic checking, savings and loan products. Over the years, Jerry led the expansion to a full service suite of savings and lending solutions, including mortgages, business lending, along with the latest in e-channel technology.Under Cross’s leadership, One CU is now approaching $150 million in assets, boasting over 16,000 members, with six branches across Vermont and NH, and proudly serving members with leading edge technologies like Mobile Banking, and EMV chip card technology to better protect cardholders from fraud, and soon Mobile Payments (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay) too.Jerry Cross, President and CEO of One Credit UnionManaging in the wake of the 2008 national economic downturn, Cross recognized that small credit unions were collapsing under the weight of increased regulatory burdens along with consumers’ unbridled demand for the latest electronic delivery channels. His insight led to the merger with both United Community Credit Union and Champlain Valley Credit Union, with One Credit Union as the surviving entity.Besides the satisfaction of exceeding member expectations, Jerry is proud of the team he has built at One CU that works so hard to provide solutions for members.  From establishing a Senior Management Team to every frontline Retail Associate, Jerry says, “Thirty two years – and it’s all been about people.  Helping people as they come in the door, and working with great people behind the scenes. I’ve been blessed.  It’s been a heck of a ride!”On Thursday, February 23rd, the One CU Springfield Branch will be hosting a “Farewell to Jerry” day which members and well-wishers are welcome to attend.About One Credit UnionOne Credit Union, headquartered in Springfield, VT, is a member owned financial cooperative with branches in Barre, Chester, Essex, Springfield, Vergennes, VT and Claremont, NH.  One CU provides a full range of financial solutions for consumers and small businesses.  Learn more(link is external).Source: Springfield, VT (February 9, 2017) – One Credit Unionlast_img read more

GOP Convention: Doom and gloom at home, clamor for Trump

first_imgGOP Convention: Doom and gloom at home, clamor for Trump Published: July 18, 2016 10:43 PM EDT Updated: July 19, 2016 6:33 PM EDT Do you see a typo or an error? Let us know. SHARE CLEVELAND (AP) – Painting a bleak picture of America’s future, Republicans promised a new era of security with Donald Trump as president as they opened a four-day convention against the backdrop of an unsettling summer and deep party divisions. The doom-and-gloom message was expected to be offset later Monday night by the candidate’s wife, Melania Trump, who was taking a rare turn in the political spotlight to show a kinder, gentler side of her brash husband. In an unusual step for a candidate, Trump announced he would come to Cleveland and introduce her.Mrs. Trump was the first of several family members and friends who will take the stage in Cleveland during the convention that officially kicks of the businessman’s general election battle with Democrat Hillary Clinton. But many of the party’s past and future stars are glaringly missing from the lineup, underscoring the concerns GOP leaders have with closely aligning themselves with Trump.Republican divisions erupted briefly on the convention floor Monday afternoon after party officials adopted rules by a shouted voice vote. Anti-Trump forces seeking to derail his nomination responded with loud and angry chants, though they were quickly quieted and there were no lingering signs of the protests as delegates returned to the cavernous convention hall for the evening program.Trump hoped the chaos would be little more than a footnote. Despite persistent party divisions, his campaign is confident Republicans will come together behind their shared disdain for Clinton. The theme of the opening night was “Make America Safe Again” and a parade of speakers told emotional stories about loved ones killed while serving in the military or at the hands of people in the United States illegally.Republicans also highlighted at length the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, while Clinton was serving as secretary of state. The mother of one of the victims choked back tears as she personally blamed Clinton for her son’s death and giving a false explanation for the attack.“If Hilary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency,” Pat Smith said. The convention comes amid a wrenching period of violence and unrest, both in the United States and around the world. In a matter of weeks, Americans have seen deadly police shootings, a shocking ambush of police in Texas and escalating racial tensions, not to mention a failed coup in Turkey and gruesome Bastille Day attack in Nice, France. Three police officers were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the eve of the convention’s opening day.Convention speakers relentlessly cast the troubling times as a result of ineffective leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in his administration.“Hillary Clinton cannot be trusted. Her judgment and character are not suited to be sitting in the most powerful office in the world,” said Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, according to excerpts of her speech released in advance.Clinton, during remarks Monday at the NAACP’s annual convention, said there was no justification for directing violence at law enforcement.“As president, I will bring the full weight of the law to bear in making sure those who kill police officers are brought to justice,” she said.Trump has been vague about how he would put the nation on a different course, offering virtually no details of his policy prescriptions despite repeated vows to be tough.Campaign chairman Paul Manafort said Trump would “eventually” outline policy specifics but not at the convention. However, Trump said in a Monday night interview with Fox News that his convention speech Thursday would discuss a “major, major” tax cut, immigration, getting rid of burdensome regulations and taking care of veterans. While Trump has been a highly unorthodox candidate, his convention opened in a traditional manner. Sign-waving delegates decked out in patriotic colors filled the arena, leaping to their feet in frequent bursts of applause.Yet the line-up of speakers and no-shows for the four-night convention was a visual representation of Trump’s struggles to unify Republicans. From the party’s former presidents to the host state governor, many leaders were staying away from the convention stage, or Cleveland altogether, wary of being linked to a man whose proposals and temperament have sparked an identity crisis within the GOP.That left Trump with an eclectic array of validators, including Scott Baio and Willie Robertson, star of “Duck Dynasty,” who took the stage with an American flag bandanna wrapped around his head.“No matter who you are, Donald Trump will have your back,” Robertson said as he opened the evening program.Trump’s team insists that by the end of the week, Republicans will plunge into the general election campaign united in their mission to defeat Clinton. But campaign officials undermined their own effort Monday by picking a fight with Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who is not attending the convention and has yet to endorse Trump.”Manafort, in remarks to reporters at a Bloomberg breakfast, called Kasich “petulant” and said the governor was “embarrassing” his party in his home state.Even some of those participating in the convention seemed to be avoiding their party’s nominee. When House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke to Wisconsin delegates Monday morning, he made no mention of Trump in his remarks.Ryan, asked at a later event whether Trump was really a conservative, said: “Define conservative; he’s not my kind of conservative.”last_img read more

OAS Secretary General says “I stand by my statements and actions”

first_imgWASHINGTON, CMC – The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, says he stands by his “statements and actions’ as he sought to defended himself against criticism from the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping that they were being made “outside the bounds of his remit as the head of an international organization.”Last week, CARICOM chairman and the Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis, Dr. Timothy Harris said that Almargo’s latest “manifestation of his inappropriate behavior” followed his statement made regarding free and fair elections in Dominica. “…it is disturbing that without first consulting with the government of Dominica, which is a Member State of the Organization, he, as Secretary-General, should be associating himself with such an inference.“The Community once again calls on the Secretary-General to refrain from actions and statements which are beyond the competence of the Office and affect the impartiality of the Organization which he has the privilege to lead,” Harris said in the statement. But Almagro, who has also fallen afoul of the regional grouping on his position regarding the unfolding situation in Venezuela, said CARICOM chairman in his statement “wrongly asserts that I acted beyond the competence of the Office of Secretary General of the OAS”.It was the opinion of Dominica’s ambassador The OAS Secretary General said in his tweet published on February 7, 2019, he acknowledges having met with the former Dominica ambassador to the OAS, Crispin Gregoire, “who expressed his concern that the upcoming elections in Dominica are not free and fair.“He also requested OAS official assistance to help ensure a level playing field in the country.”Almagro said that “as is evident from the transcript, Ambassador Gregoire expressed his concern to me and I formulated the communication.“I am surprised that I was denounced for being transparent and for not censoring ideas, particularly in an organization that is obliged to act in accordance with democratic principles such as freedom of speech, openness and tolerance for the diversity of political views.”He said he was reiterating a position adopted when he took up office in 2015 that “I would be “both government and opposition.Open door policy“As Secretary General of the OAS, I have an open-door policy, I meet with people with different views and I welcome pluralism of ideas and beliefs,” he said, adding that “it is worth noting that, according to a study published by the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and The University of Sydney, Dominica is the country with the lowest rate of implementation (below 10 per cent) of the recommendations of OAS Electoral Observation Missions.“Democracy is a way of life and an ongoing process of continuous improvement and the recommendations of the Organization aim to guarantee voters the best possible electoral process. When they are not followed and not implemented, this does not help member states to increase the level of trust from the opposition and the international community in their electoral processes.“I stand by my statements and actions, which are completely consistent with the competencies of the Office of Secretary General and the democratic principles that this Organization promotes and defends,” Almargo said in his response.last_img read more

An appeal to all patriotic Govt ministers

first_imgDear Editor,Even with a small population like ours, the chance of one becoming a Member of Parliament is slim to none. But if you’re fortunate in your lifetime to have this great honour bestowed upon you, nothing matters more than putting the interest of Guyana and her people above all… above self.Do the right thing and you will be forever respected as a patriot, a person of integrity, of high moral values, and a champion of the poor and downtrodden. But if you don’t, you become a Moses Nagamootoo or a Khemraj Ramjattan, despised by many for betraying everything they once stood for to cling to position and power. With a few exceptions, the ruckus behaviour of Government MPs that completely drowned out the entire speech made in the National Assembly by the Leader of the Opposition on the No-confidence Motion (NCM), clearly defines their characters and expose the lowness of those who serve in the highest decision-making forum of Government. As a Member of Parliament, I am often embarrassed and appalled at the lack of decorum and unparliamentary language and behaviour displayed by some in the National Assembly. Some Government Ministers have no ethics and etiquette. Yet these are the people who represent us at international forums with world leaders and their representatives, and who are given the powers to implement laws that affect the lives of every citizen here. Then there are others like Nagamootoo and Ramjattan who now willingly betray the principles upon which the AFC was formed and shamelessly defend the transgressions committed by this Government to protect the grandeur and perks they now enjoy as members of Cabinet.Thankfully, not everyone fits this description. Some, I know, are genuinely concerned that Guyana is headed in the wrong direction, and would do a Charrandas if they weren’t so afraid for their own safety and the wellbeing of their families.Just yesterday, it was reported in the State newspaper that Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge, who is often above the fray, wrote in a letter to the Canadian High Commissioner that he was “unaware of any threat” to Charrandas Persaud that would have even required consular protection.Even this career politician who has now distinguished himself as an elder statesman after once presiding over the worst economic period that helped bankrupt the nation during his tenure as the PNC Government Minister of Finance and Planning, seems afraid to condemn his PNC colleague Jennifer Wade, the Region 5 Government MP, whose voice can be clearly identified saying, “Charrandas, you gon dead tonight.”Surely the Hon Carl Greenidge must have heard this distinct threat himself from the thousands of video clips played over and over again in news reports and in the public domain on social media. But as decent as Greenidge is, he too must be afraid and is too old to go up against the dangerous PNC to ruin his chances of becoming APNU’s Presidential Candidate to contest the upcoming elections. For despite the earlier pronouncements by Volda Lawrence and Joseph Harmon, I really don’t believe President Granger will ever run again. It is an undisputed fact that on that fateful evening of December 21, 2018, the Opposition motion was successfully carried, and the Government fell. Now, like a drowning man, they are desperately grasping at straws to cling to power. Since then, Government has been stubbornly and shamelessly defiant of the Constitution, pursuing a series of frivolous actions to stop the inevitable – The resignation of the Cabinet including the President and new elections within three months according to Article 106 (6) of the Constitution. One cannot simply change the rules in his favour after the game has been played and lost. The Charrandas vote in favor of the NCM has been totally ventilated. It is now time to move on. Regardless of which side of the political spectrum you’re on, the next few days will determine just how far one is prepared to go without compromising one’s integrity and political career. The intent of Government Ministers will be scrutinised and characters questioned.I am sure that if asked, every Guyanese would say that they’re a patriot. But how many, like myself, would willingly risk their lives for this country? And to a lesser extent, how many would sacrifice their jobs, insecure though it may be at this time, to prevent Guyana from turning into a pariah state? For selfish reasons, I wager not many would do it. But I’m equally confident there are still good patriotic men and women whose loyalty to Guyana and her people is above reproach. Both Nagamootoo and Ramjattan are too far gone, post-mortem don’t ever bring back the dead. But there are others in the AFC that should be concerned about their own political careers and the need to make amends for the betrayal inflicted upon their own supporters who once believed the AFC to have noble intentions. It is not too late.It is to those and other Government Ministers that I make this appeal to put Guyana first. Save our nation from a constitutional crisis that will result in lawlessness, chaos, and the embarrassment of being the laughing stock of the Caribbean and the rest of the world. As an individual with a conscience, you can resign now to protect what’s left of your integrity, credibility and your political and professional career. In a few short months, this Government will be forced to debit office and Guyana will be under new management. But you don’t have to go down like rats on a sinking ship to avoid being called a “traitor” and other derogatory names, you have a duty to put Guyana first. And with a clear conscience, justify your resignation from Government as your patriotic duty to the pledge you took as a Member of Parliament.Sincerely,Harry GillPPP/C Member ofParliamentlast_img read more

“Green Button” Open Data Just Created an App Market for 27M US Homes

first_imgEarlier this year, influential venture capitalist Fred Wilson encouraged entrepreneurs and VCs to get behind open data. Writing on his widely read blog, Wilson urged developers to adopt the Green Button, the project that former United States Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra launched in 2011 to unleash energy data.Today, the Obama Administration announced that nine major utilities and electricity suppliers have committed to using and extending the Green Button to enable some 15 million households to access data about their energy usage. As with the Blue Button for healthcare data, the White House asserts that providing energy consumers with secure access to information about energy usage will increase innovation in the sector and empower citizens with more information. “This is the kind of innovation that gets me excited,” Wilson wrote. The Green Button is like OAuth for energy data. It is a simple standard that the utilities can implement on one side and web/mobile developers can implement on the other side. And the result is a ton of information sharing about energy consumption and in all likelihood energy savings that result from more informed consumers. The thinking here, as with Blue Button, which enables veterans (and soon all federal workers) to download their personal health data, is that broad adoption by utilities and engagement with industry will lead to new opportunities for software developers and civic entrepreneurs to serve a new market of millions of consumers who want better tools to analyze and manage their energy data. Chopra challenged the energy community last September to model the Green Button after the Blue Button. According to the White House, a common standard for the data in Green Button will be further developed in collaboration with a public-private partnership supported by the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology.“Companies are already developing Web and smartphone applications and services for businesses and homeowners that can use Green Button data,” Dr. John P. Holdren, assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote in a White House blog post. “These tools can help consumers choose the most economical rate plan for their energy use patterns; deliver customized energy-efficiency tips; provide easy-to-use tools to size and finance rooftop solar panels; and conduct virtual energy audits that can cut costs for building owners and speed the initiation of retrofits.”“If you’ve got a smartphone or tablet, you know how clever and convenient some of the apps are, and how they can transform the way you manage your time, your finances, and the way you work,” said Tony Earley, PG&E Corporation’s Chairman, CEO and President in a prepared statement. “The more apps that are available on the energy side, the more chance our customers will have to find an easy way to similarly manage their energy use.”Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy The electricity suppliers and utilities that are making this new commitment serve, in aggregate, 15 million households. They include American Electric Power, Austin Energy, Baltimore Gas and Electric, CenterPoint Energy, Commonwealth Edison, NSTAR, PECO, Reliant, Virginia Dominion Power. In service of that goal, the administration announced that Itron, Oracle, and Silver Spring Networks will join Aclara and Tendril in developing Green Button software and a new Apps for Energy contest to try to catalyze the development of new Web and mobile tools.Open Data and Smart DisclosureThe Green Button is a good example of data for the public good and “smart disclosure,” whereby a private company or government institution provides a person with access to his or her own data in open formats.Smart disclosure is defined by Cass Sunstein, administrator of the White House Office for Information and Regulatory Affairs, as a process that “refers to the timely release of complex information and data in standardized, machine-readable formats in ways that enable consumers to make informed decisions.”For instance, the quarterly financial statements of the top public companies in the world are now available online through the Securities and Exchange Commission. Why does it matter? The interactions of citizens with companies or government entities generate a huge amount of economically valuable data. If consumers and regulators had access to that data, they could tap it to make better choices about everything from finance to healthcare to real estate, much in the same way that Web applications like Hipmunk and Zillow let consumers make more informed decisions.“I’m a big fan of simplicity and open standards to unleash a lot of innovation,” wrote Wilson.APIs and open data aren’t always simple concepts for end users. Green Buttons and Blue Buttons are pretty simple concepts that most consumers will understand. I’m hoping we soon see Yellow Buttons, Red Buttons, Purple Buttons, and Orange Buttons too.Let’s get behind these open data initiatives. Let’s build them into our apps. And let’s pressure our hospitals, utilities, and other institutions to support them. I’m going to reach out to ConEd, the utility in NYC, and find out when they are going to add Green Button support to their consumers data. I hope it is soon.ConEd doesn’t look to be on board with the Green Button quite yet – but they may soon have more incentives to join. alexander howard Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Related Posts Tags:#Government#Internet of Things#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…last_img read more

Probable line-ups: Roma v Napoli

first_img Watch Serie A live in the UK on Premier Sports for just £11.99 per month including live LaLiga, Eredivisie, Scottish Cup Football and more. Visit: https://subscribe.premiersports.tv/ Roma could give Mert Cetin his first start as they host Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico, while doubts remain on the visiting front pair. It kicks off at 14.00 GMT, click here for a match preview. There is only one point separating the two sides going into the weekend, with Napoli drawing 2-2 in the controversial game against Atalanta and Roma putting four past Udinese. Federico Fazio is suspended due to his red card in Udine, he joins the lengthy list of absentees from the squad, which include the injured Lorenzo Pellegrini, Bryan Cristante, Amadou Diawara, Nikola Kalinic, Henrik Mkhitaryan and Davide Zappacosta. It means Mert Cetin could be in with a chance of making his full debut for the Giallorossi at the centre of defence. Gianluca Mancini will continue to deputise in central midfield. Edin Dzeko will lead the line, with Justin Kluivert, Javier Pastore and Nicolo Zaniolo expected to be playing just behind the Bosnian. Napoli meanwhile will be without coach Carlo Ancelotti, who was sent off in the draw against La Dea on Wednesday.  Right-back Kevin Malcuit is out for six months following knee surgery, midfielder Allan is also out for four weeks with a sprained knee. The good news is that former defender Kostas Manolas has returned to face his former club, whilst Mario Rui is also expected to return. Elseid Hysaj is struggling with a fratured sternum. Piotr Zielinski is expected to replace Allan in midfield, with Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik and Dries Mertens set to play up front, with Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon on the wings. Mertens has a great record against Roma, scoring five goals from his last five games. However, there are mixed reports on who will lead the line this afternoon, as Hirving Lozano is also in with a shout. Roma: Pau Lopez; Spinazzola, Cetin, Smalling, Kolarov; Veretout, Mancini; Kluivert, Pastore, Zaniolo; Dzeko Napoli: Meret; Di Lorenzo, Manolas, Koulibaly, Mario Rui; Callejon, Zielinski, Fabian Ruiz, Insigne; Milik, Mertens Ref: Rocchilast_img read more

Hot and happening: Lalu and Nitish make heat wave a political issue

first_imgPolitics in Bihar is getting hotter with Lalu Prasad launching an agitation against the state government after his return from a prolonged stay in Delhi. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president fired the first salvo by announcing his resolve to hold meetings across the state in the evenings because of the prevailing heat wave. But Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has launched a counter-attack by chalking out a fresh itinerary to travel to the districts and meet people during daytime, regardless of the soaring mercury.Nitish is leaving for a three-day tour to Bhagalpur on Thursday as part of his ongoing Seva Yatra, his statewide tour to get the people’s feedback on public welfare schemes launched by his government. He will subsequently stay in Kishanganj from June 3-5 and visit Bhojpur between June 7 and 9. At all these places, the chief minister will hold public meetings and meet local people during daytime to listen to their grievances.Bihar has been reeling under an intense heat wave with temperatures hovering around 44 degree Celsius these days. The weather condition had prompted Lalu to avoid daytime rallies in the districts he is scheduled to visit over the next few days to revitalise his party and drum up people’s support against the Nitish government. But his announcement gave his political rivals an opportunity to hit out at him. Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi said that Lalu had grown old and could not go out to hold meetings under the sun.”Laluji has announced that he will hold meetings only in the evenings,” he said. “On the contrary, the chief minister has been visiting different villages to get the feedback of the people even in 45 degree Celsius temperature.”advertisementLalu, however, dismissed Modi’s criticism. He said that he had decided to hold the meetings in the evening to spare the poor people from the scorching sun. “Nitish travels in the air-conditioned cars but the public remains under the sun all the time,” Lalu said. “He is not bothered about the poor people in the state.”Lalu said that Nitish was being apathetic to the plight of the people, highlighting that there was acute power crisis everywhere in the state, except the VVIP areas of the state capital. “I will have to light up the lanterns in the evenings to hold my meetings,” he added.Lalu said his decision to go out to the districts as part of his party’s agitation against the state government had unnerved the leaders from the ruling coalition. “There is a sense of palpable unease over my return to Patna,” he said. “They are keeping a watch on each and every movement of mine with trepidation.”At the RJD’s national executive committee meeting in Patna earlier this week, Lalu had announced the launch of a statewide agitation against the Nitish government on the issues of crime, corruption and power crisis. He had also called for all the opposition parties to unite against the NDA to prevent split of their votes. But neither have the Congress nor the Left responded favourably to his appeal so far.Nitish has also made light of Lalu’s call for agitation. “I do not want to say anything about him,” he said. “I am afraid he will go back to Delhi, sulking, if I say something. I want him to stay in Patna now.”Lalu had been staying mostly in Delhi since his party’s rout in the 2010 state assembly elections.last_img read more
