(Photo by Karen Shellhammer).by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The last three odd years have been good ones for the Caldwell boys basketball program. In 2015, the Bluejays placed third at state. In 2017, the Bluejays finished third again. Now it’s 2019, and Caldwell is looking for another state tournament placing. But in order to do that, the Bluejays must get past a team they lost to on Dec. 11 – Berean Academy. The two teams will hook up again this Thursday night at 8:15 p.m. at the Dodge City – United Wireless Arena for the first round of the Class 1A State Tournament. There’s been a lot of focus on that evening. The Caldwell girls lost to Berean on that mid-December night, only to come back and beat that same team in the first round of sub-state last week.“We are looking to do the same thing,” said Jason Marlin, third year Caldwell basketball coach. “Especially when it matters the most.In December, Berean defeated Caldwell 56-36. Caldwell was down by only four points at the half, but Berean came out in the third quarter and got hot outscoring the Bluejays 18-5 en route to a 20-point win.“We got ourselves in a hole and then we couldn’t get ourselves back out,” Marlin said. “They can really shoot the ball well. We can’t afford to get behind like this on Thursday.”Caleb Noyes led Caldwell with 10 points that game and was the only Bluejay to reach double figures.“They are extremely well coached,” Marlin said. “We will need to minimize our turnovers while pushing the ball down court. If we execute our half-court offense, much like we did against Moundridge, that will help.”Caldwell got to state after an exciting final seconds kind of win against Moundridge last week.Caldwell is coming off that exciting 39-37 victory over Moundridge in the sub-state championship in El Dorado that was concluded when Dru Volavka stole the ball and took it down court for the game-winning layup. The Bluejays will be dependent on their seniors Jalen Risley and Corbin Rice, who have averaged in double figures, 15.1 and 10.4 ppg. Volavka has 8.7 pug and Noyes has 5.1 ppg. This is going to be a loaded state tournament. Caldwell, despite having a 23-2 record, could only get the fourth seed. Central Plains, the proverbial favorite, is undefeated at 25-0. Osborne is the second seed at 23-0 and Hanover is the third seed at 24-1. Of the eight teams in the tourney, there is a cumulative 21 losses among all of them. Macksville has the eighth seed, and its record isn’t a shabby 19-6.Hopefully, Caldwell fans will come out in droves for state tournament game Thursday. The official Class 1A state tournament schedule is as follows:#1 Central Plains 25-0 vs. #8 Macksville 19-6, 6:30 p.m.#4 Caldwell 23-2 vs. Berean Academy 22-3, 8:15 p.m.#2 Osborne 23-0 vs. #7 Lebo 18-5, 3 p.m.#3 Hanover 24-1 vs. #6 St. John-Hudson 21-4, 4:45 p.m.Follow us on Facebook.Follow us on Twitter.
